Chris had watched D.J. from the window until she disappeared into the woods; then he took a shower. As the heated water relaxed the tense muscles of his shoulders and back, his troubled soul calmed as well. |

He'd waited all his life for D.J., and now that he'd found her she ran from him. But since he'd waited this long, he had faith that if he waited just a little longer, she would understand the gift they'd been given and come to him. Once she did, they would have the rest of their lives to be together. |

Chris got out of the shower and dressed. Thinking he'd try and work, pass the time until D.J. returned in industrious pursuit, he pulled the packet of pictures from the pocket of his computer case and dumped them out on the bed. But he couldn't bring himself to go any further. His mind wasn't on the task at hand. His mind was filled with D.J. |

Chris went to the window once more and looked out, hoping to see her materialize from the woods and return to him. At a movement from the edge of the trees Chris smiled and headed for the front door. His fingers touched the doorknob, and he glanced outside once again through the window set into the door. |

The smile froze on his lips, and he jerked his body to the side, pressing his back to the wall to avoid being seen through the window. How could he have forgotten the danger stalking them both? |
